Dr Vivekananda Raja after completing his post graduation in the year 1979 was involved in a project on corneal mycosis (fungal infections). He realized that most patients if treated early could have been prevented from going blind. Also he realized a majority of the patients were from the rural belt. Poverty, ignorance and poor hygiene couple with poor medical infrastructure prevented early treatment.

With support from his family and local donors, he established the Sankara Rural Eye Hospital. The Sankara Rural Eye Hospital is located near the temple town of Srivilliputhur around 70 kilometres south of Madurai. Our state-of-the-art facility is oriented toward providing patient-friendly care.

The Sankara Rural Eye Hospital is recognized as a leading center for patient care in southern Tamilnadu.

Sankara Rural Eye Hospital, Krishnaarpanam which was managed by Dr Vivekananda Raja became part of the Sankara Institution hospitals in 2004.

The transition was facilitated by Mission for Vision while the entire renovation and equipments was funded by Mr Devidas N Budhrani.

Mr Budhrani not only continued his support but also funded the phase II expansion. With this expansion, the bed capacity has been increased to 200 and eventually the hospital expects to perform 20,000 surgeries. On 14th February, the new section of the hospital was officially inaugurated.

Mr. Devidas N. Budhrani is a businessman having its base in London & Nigeria. He is a philanthropist and has supported various social causes. To give a professional approach to charity, Naraindas Morbai Budhrani Trust was registered in 2002 in Mumbai. In India, he partners with Mission for Vision for providing eye care to the needy and in Nigeria he supports Tulsi Chanrai Foundation for the Primary health, Eye and Water projects.
